Climate has major impact on all human activities, including military activities. Climatic studies from the military perspective are important. Climatic factors affect military plans, tactics and doctrines, command, selecting troops, military equipment, clothing, logistics, maintenance, development and support. In this study, an index of physiological equivalent temperature (PET) was used to evaluate the effect of climatic factors on military forces' activities in west Azerbaijan province. Thus, 7 stations that have been active in the region for more than 25 years (1985-2009) were selected. The data on climatic parameters including air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, cloud and vapor pressure were received daily and hourly from meteorological organization. Climate and comfort conditions as well as heat and cold stress in the days and months of the year were assessed by using PET index. Then, the zoning was performed in GIS environment The results showed that in the highland areas of province (western and south-east), with the exception of June, July, August and September have cold stress for the activities of the military forces, whereas in the lowland areas (eastern parts), there are desirable conditions for the activities of the armed forces from April to November. But from November to April due to cold stress, conditions are not desirable for troops. Thermal stress has been very limited and occurs only during the months of July and August in lowland areas.
