From the ancient time, geography as a branch of science has been in the employ of rulers in administrating, fighting and military expeditions. Despite the various applications of geography in other branches of science, its prime use is in military and governmental affairs.
Nowadays, the armed forces of all nations deem this discipline necessary .Map is the first and the most essential device required for the armies in each military operation. This is why modern armies establish geographical organizations that are regarded as effective units in the armed forces of all countries.
Collins, a high ranking military expert in the USA, says: "natural factors are always more destructive than the opponents. I wonder if we are the victims of geography or the misunderstanding of our senior commanders of geography! "
At the peace time, every country has to consider specific policies to react against possible contingencies. This is called doctrine in military terms.
.Factors affecting this decision include: geographical position, armed forces, arms and equipment, and training. Paying attention to geostrategic issues that means the exploration of the relationship between geography (natural and manmade environment) and strategy is very important. Any disregard for establishing a wise relation between human desires and the conditions of natural environment may cause serious problems. In this paper the author tries to explain the role of geography and describes the effectiveness, capabilities and limitations of geographical environments for the combatants in the battlefield.
