Islam is the religion of peace and mercy. The Prophet of Islam is the mercy to all beings. Those who accuse Islam of being violent are unaware of the reality of this religion or try to damage its reputation.
The most obvious form of violence is realized in war resulting in destruction, massacre, and homelessness. Reflection on Qoranic verses and Islamic traditions demonstrates another image of war. In Islam war is not permissible except for making people aware of the reality and freeing them from despotism. Even this kind of just war is subject to human and ethical principles that must be respected by Moslem combatants. If they do not respect these they will not be rewarded but punished.
This paper attempts to extract these human and ethical principles from the Holy Qoran and to manifest the elegant and peaceful image of Islam. Some of these principles that are not emphasized by other religions include: not to exceed the limits, to summon people to accept Islam before waging war, retaliation, sheltering the enemy, to allow him to hear the words of God, pacifism, keeping promises and oaths, behaving towards the captives, etc.
