Military commanders use geographical skills in their decision-making processes sporadically. In addition to aerial photography, satellite images, maps and charts, Geographical information system is another skill having a determinant role in rapid decision making and timely executing of military plans. Complexity, diversity, and hugeness of information related to military activities on the one hand and the ability of computers in analyzing such information on the other hand, explain the development of this system.
The main objectives of this system in military activities include:
1- to expedite the execution of combat operations
2- to reconnoiter topographic features
3- Data bank
4- Developing thematic maps
