The constant development of technologies and sciences in the age of information explosion has culminated in the complication of terminologies and concepts used in different fields. Accordingly, the use of abbreviations is highly increased. Without some acquaintance with scientific terminologies, we would not be able to grasp science. Today, abbreviations form a major part of technical language used in different disciplines.
This paper aims at familiarizing military experts as well as officers in different branches of the army with processes of making abbreviations. Indeed, it is a descriptive study of abbreviations used in military sciences. First, the history of using abbreviations in different languages is presented. Afterwards, diverse types of abbreviations are categorized as Acronym, Alphabetism, Syllabic abbreviation, and Written abbreviations. Finally, a sample of each type in English military texts is given. Examples of such abbreviations, that are recently gained currency in military organizations
of Iran under the influence of European languages, will be demonstrated, too.
