Hydrology is a branch of physical geography including different issues. Military movements in each area hinge on various geographical features.
The network of waters is the most significant factor determining military strategies and planning combats. As the valuable experiences of the combatants in the Sacred Defense have demonstrated, studying waters from a military viewpoint and having knowledge of the hydrology of combat zones are very important to achieve success. It is important to note that during the Sacred Defense more than 215 offensives had been planned and launched against enemy forces. The military examination of available pieces of information evidences that hydrological studies accompanied with proper military strategies have brought about much creativity and innovations.
Indeed, crossing estuaries like Hoor-ol-Azim or rivers such as Karoon must have required scrupulous surveys of hydrological engineering.
Therefore hydraulic constructions in the Sacred Defense with short, medium or long-term objectives had become the focus of attention. The Martyred Chamran Canal, Ghadir canal, Salman Canal, the Martyred Poostfroosh Canal and tens of other projects were examples of such constructions.
Generally speaking, the hydrological studies in connection with military movements have two dimensions:
(i) The effect of water in defensive military movements.
(ii) The effect of water in offensive military movements.
This paper is devoted to these two issues.
